This is a true story about a veiled woman from Wisma Fatimah at Alex Kawilarang St. 63, Bandung, West Java, who was infected with the dirty disease of gonorrhea, as a result of the nikah mut’ah (temporary marriage). As reported by the LPPI (Institute of Islamic Research and Studies) where the file was submitted to the Attorney General's Office and all Governors, quoting ASA (Assabiqunal Awwalun) 5th edition, 1411H, pg. 44-47 with the title “The Last Patient”, as published in the book “Why We Reject Shiah (transl.)” pg. 270-273.
Here's the full story:
For the second time, the woman went to see Doctor Hanung, a specialist doctor in dermatology (skin) and gynaecology in the city of Bandung. That afternoon, she came bringing the lab test result like what had been instructed by the doctor two days before. It had been a few weeks that she complained of feeling pain while urinating (drysuria), as well as discharging excessive fluid from the vagina (vaginal discharge).
That atmosphere in the doctor's house that afternoon was quite busy as it was filled with patients. A child looked crying in pain from the wound on his foot, perhaps he's suffering from Pioderma. Next to him was a woman, who now and then, scratched her body because of the itching. At the end of the seats was a teenage girl who looked daydreaming, reflecting on the acne vulgaris (pimples) which she suffered from.
When the woman came in, she got the last number. She waited for all the patients to be treated until her turn came. When her turn came and with the greeting of salaam, she entered Doctor Hanung's check-room. The check-room was quite spacious and neat. There was a patient bed with white covering and a clean table of the doctor. At the corner of the room was a sink for washing hands after examining a patient, as well as a compartment containing medicines.
For a moment, Doctor Hanung stared at her patient. Not as was common, her patient was a veiled woman. There was nothing visible except a pair of eyes which radiated a sorrowful look. After a brief interview (anamnesis) Doctor Hanung opened the envelope containing the lab test result brought along by her patient. Doctor Hanung was shocked to see the lab test result. It seemed impossible. There was some kind of disbelief in the matter. How could a woman with jilbab who was sure to have guarded her honour, be exposed to that disease, a disease that only infects people who always change sex partners.
In a calm manner, Doctor Hanung again performed the anamnesis carefully:
+ “Sister, are you still studying?”
- “Yes Doc.”
+ “In what semester?”
- “Semester seven Doc.!”
+ “What faculty?”
- “Social and Political Science”
+ “Department of mass communication... right?”
This time it was the last patient who was shocked. She raised her face and looked at Doctor Hanung from behind the veil.
- “You do know?”
+ “Aah,….Naah, it was just a maybe!”
The conversation between Doctor Hanung and her last patient, was as if shifted from the issue of sickness into another issue which absolutely had nothing to do with the issue of the sickness.
+ “Are you really from this Bandung or from outside the city?”
It appeared that the last patient started to feel uneasy with the Doctor's question which began to diverge from the medical issue. She responded with annoyance:
- “What the heck, Doc…..you are asking so many questions?”
+ “Aah nothing,……..Perhaps it has something to do with the disease you are suffering from!”
The last patient seemed to be increasingly irritated with the Doctor's question that was getting here and there. A little annoyed, she replied:
- “I am from Pekalongan”
+ “The house?”
- “Wisma Fathimah, Alex Kawilarang Street 63”
+ “Do you always join the Islamic studies in campus...?”
- “Yeah,.. sometimes Doc.!”
+ “You often follow the study circle of Bang Jalal?”
Once again the last patient stared at Doctor Hanung.
- “Bang Jalal who?”
She asked in a little higher tone.
+ “Jalaluddin Rachmat, of course! Who else is Bang Jalal in Bandung other than him…. If in Jogja there is Bang Jalal Muksin.”
- “Yes,……. I do join occasionally.”
+ “In Pekalongan,……(while trying to recall) do you also know Ahmad Baraqba?”
The last patient looked increasingly annoyed with the Doctor's questions that seemed to be getting directionless. But Doctor Hanung nodded her head instead in agreement with her last patient's agitation. She suspected that the analysis on her patient's disease was almost done. In the end, in a voice filled with force, Doctor Hanung said:
- “Like this sister, I apologized for my questions that seemed to be purposeless just now. Now please answer my question honestly for the sake of the therapy of the disease you are suffering from,…………..”
Now it was the last patient's turn to raise he face listening to Doctor Hanung's words. She seemed to be puzzled with what question would be asked next by the Doctor who was examining her that time.
+ “Actually I am very surprised with the disease you are suffering from, it seems unlikely for an ukhti to be infected with this disease.”
- “What ailment Doc.?”
That last patient cut off Doctor Hanung's sentence, that had been incomplete, with curiosity.
+ “Looking at the complaint that you are feeling, as well as from the lab test result, it all supports a diagnosis of gonorrhea, a diseases caused by sexual intercourse.”
Like being hit by a thunder, the woman with blue jilbab and hijab, Doctor Hanung's last patient that afternoon, screamed:
- “No way!!!”
She was then seated weak on the chair, as if helpless, hearing the explanation from Doctor Hanung. The gaze from her eyes was hollow, as if losing hope and in fact it was like she had no more spirit to live. Meanwhile, Doctor Hanung's assistant who usually registered patients who are going to be treated, was seen gaiting here and there, as if wanting to know what actually happened. It was not often that Doctor Hanung checks her patient that long. Maybe because she was the last patient, that the doctor did not feel in a hurry, thus the examination took a little longer. But then she was surprised to hear the scream of the last patient, making her more curious to know of what happened.
Doctor Hanung, with her experience in the practice, was not too surprised with the reaction of her last patient that afternoon. Only that, what she could not stop thinking about was, why did that woman with complete jilbab get infected with a disease that normally infects bad women? It had been two patients now whom she had found to be suffering from the same disease and uniquely they both dressed in Muslimah clothings. It was just that, the first patient did not don the hijab to veil the face like her patient this time. Previously, the patient who was infected with the disease was also wearing a Muslimah dress, when pressed hard she finally admitted that she did practice nikah mut’ah.
That of her previous patient had been far involved with the thought patterns and movement of Shiah that was available in this city of Bandung. From that experience, there arose in her mind some questions about the Shiah figures, whom she had heard of, in Bandung and coincidentally she has a friend from Pekalongan who told about the development of the Shiah movement in Pekalongan. She intended to unveil the veil which blanketed the secret of the woman in front of her that afternoon.
+ “What do you think sister… the disease you are suffering from does not infect except the people who normally change sex partners. It seems unlikely to happen to a Muslimah like you. If that's your past, well.. I understand and may you recover soon, repent to Allah,….or maybe there are other possibilities…?”
That question from Doctor Hanung made her last patient lifted her face for a moment, and then looked down again as if she had no more strength to speak. Doctor Hanung patiently waited for an answer from her last patient that afternoon.
She moved up from her seat and called on her assistant to tidy things up and get ready to close the clinic after having handled her last patient later.
- “I don't believe in your words about my disease!” She said in a stutter.
+ “Up to you sister,…….but anyway you can't belie the fact that you are carrying... right?”
- “But how can I have that accursed disease, whereas I have always been in the ambience of life that is obedient to the rules of Allah?”
+ “I too have a good judgment of you,….but the reality you are undergoing cannot be denied?”
For a moment, the doctor and the patient fell silent. The check-room was quiet. And then a voice was heard from the door opened by the doctor's assistant who was tidying up the items used for the registration and administration of patients. The doctor's assistant went out right away with a look full of question marks, knowing Doctor Hanung was still awaiting her patient.
+ “Try to do a self introspection again, perhaps there was something wrong,…….. because medically, someone cannot get this disease except through the reason mentioned.”
- “No Doctor,…….all these while I have been living my life in a good way in accordance with the requirement of Islamic Shari'ah,….. I still do not believe in your analysis.”
Doctor Hanung frowned her forehead listening to her patient's response. She did not feel hurt by the words of her patient who repeatedly said she did believe in her analysis. What's the point to be angry to a sick person. Worse, it would only aggravate her sickness, and anyway her analysis did not become wrong just because it was rejected by her patient. With full of wisdom, the doctor asked again,……..
+ “Maybe you do practice nikah mut’ah??
The last patient looked up,
- “Well Doctor! What do you mean?”
+ “That means you often change sex partners freely!”
- “What!… But isn't that right according to Islam Shari'ah Doc.!” The patient defended herself.
+ “Ooo,…Oh I see,…if you have said so from the beginning, I wouldn't have troubled myself in detecting you disease. Strictly speaking, you are a follower of the Shiah teachings who freely change mut’ah partners at your convenience. Yes.. that's the sexual venture you are doing. Stop it if you want to be safe.”
- “What's with you Doctor, I am living correctly as per the Islamic Sha'riah according to my belief, but you prohibits me instead with your medical reasons.”
Up to here, Doctor Hanung became speechless. Through her clenched teeth and facial expression, an intense anger against the undisciplined words of her patient radiated. And then came out the heavy words, full of pressure:
+ “It's up to you and whatever are the words you use to defend yourself,… you go ahead with your sexual venture, with the risk that you'll wallow in the awful venereal disease, and it is very probable that at some stage later, you will be infected with the very dreaded AIDS disease,…or you stop and repent to Allah from following the filthy teachings if you want healing.”
- “So..sorry, Doc., I have made you offended!”
Doctor Hanung only nodded in response to the stammering words of her patient.
+ “Like this sister,…the prescription that I am going to give you will be of no use if nonetheless you don't stop from the life practice that you have been living all these time. And every doctor you visit will act the same,… thus it is up to you sister. I am not ready to give you the prescription if you do not want to stop.”
- “Err…OK , Doc., …Insha Allah I will stop!”
Doctor Hanung immediately wrote down a prescription for her last patient, and then handed it to her.
- “How much Doc.?”
+ “Never mind,…. I will already be full of shukr (grateful) if you are willing to stop the bestial way of life and return to the right way of life according to the guidance of Rasulullah. You just pay for the prescription.”
Doctor Hanung's last patient blushed listening to her answer.
- “Thank you Doc.,…….excuse me”
The woman made a move and walked out onto the courtyard of Doctor Hanung's house. She walked through the terrace near the blue bougainvillea which was as if blending with the color of her jilbab. When reaching the gate, she again looked back at the terrace, and then disappeared, swallowed by the hustle and bustle of Bandung city that started to darken that afternoon.
