Shocked. That was the first reaction on hearing that a Burn the Koran Day is being planned. An act of burning the Qur’an planned by a priest named Terry Jones. He comes from a group, the Dove World Outreach Center in Florida, America. This shock is very natural, because throughout history no one had been this scared of Islam, to the extent that the innocent scripture has to burned. This case also shows all at once how there is a movement that is in despair when addressing the very rapid development of Islam all over the world today. A very acute despair because they do not know what else to do, to the extent that barbaric acts are carried out that shows the ignorance of the person in questions. This is the moment of the West’s unequivocal defeat over Islam.
Maybe Terry Jones was only looking for sensations. Especially when he announced the cancellation of the Qur’an burning after being pressed by various parties. But this opinion turned out to be wrong, when two of his followers, Pastors Bob Old and Danni Allen did really burn the Qur’an at the backyard, witnessed by some journalists. Unhesitantly, they burnt the Qur’an with the spirit of hate. They said, “It’s a false book, it’s a false prophet (Muhammad) and it’s false Scripture.”
Indeed, Terry Jones and his followers all these while believe that Islam and the Shari’ah law are responsible for the terrorist acts on the World Trade Center in New York on the 11th September 2001. An accusation which is misguided and lacking of knowledge.
This action of course is sparking a lot of response from many parts of the world and even from the American public themselves. The American supreme commander in Afghanistan, General David Petraeus, criticized harshly the burning of the Qur’an. According to him, the burning could cause problems for the American troops anywhere and could endanger the forces and harm the entire efforts achieved in Afghanistan. The American foreign minister, Hillary Rodham Clinton, stated that the burning of the Qur’an to commemorate the ninth years of the 11th September attack, is an embarrassing act. Whereas, Attorney General Eric Holder considers the act as being done by idiots and that it is jeopardizing. The foreign ministry spokesman stated that the plan would threaten the existence of the American troops, diplomats and tourists overseas.
While the Cuban figure who is known to be anti-America, Fidel Castro, called America as very “fragile” following the issue of the Qur’an burning. He called the threat of burning the Qur’an by a pastor from Florida a kind of American media "slapstick"; they are the one who threw, they are also the one who are baffled like hell. "This problem is a show of the media giant, complementing the chaos approaching the sinking of a superpower," he said.
While a senior Iranian commander judged that the burning of the Qur'an is only a part of American scenarios to divert the attention of the world from an even bigger evil. "By creating secondary issues and drawing public attention towards marginal issues, the American government are trying to cover up the bigger crimes and the burning of the Qur’an on 11th September by a Christian priest is a part of that movement," said the deputy commander of the Iran’s Armed Forces Brigadier General Masoud Sayyid Jazayeri.
He went on to add that there is a strong evidence that the actual incident of the 11th September was carried out by the government of USA and Israeli agents. Jazayeri argued that certain lobbies as decision makers in America were trying to find a reason that could be accepted in order to expand their influence throughout the world and the 11th September incident gave an enough reason for that. But as time passes, American involvement in the incident have been revealed and the American government do not have other choice except to create other trouble in order to cover up that crime.
Different from the response of the two men, the response from the Hamas government is very different. To deal with the burning, they have prepared 40,000 Qur'an memorizers. They had prepared cadres who memorize the Qur'an from their early age. They introduced the Qur'an to the Muslim children and make them as huffadz who will always guard the purity of the Qur'an.
Yes, the Qur'an Is Special
At least this tragedy of the Qur'an burning will present a lot of hikmah and lessons. At least there are some things we can note and we can do.
Firstly, the Qur'an is a very special book . Many other religions have books that are no longer sacred and are already contaminated by their own people. But the Qur'an will remain to be guarded by Allah until the earth becomes extinct. So that the efforts of the kafirs to wipe out the Qur'an which they will always do, will be met with failures. After their efforts of trying to desecrate of the Qur'an failed, giving wrong interpretations of the Qur'an also failed, in the end they chose to burn the Qur'an which all these time has made them tense from restraining pent-up emotions. It gave them headache thinking of how to destroy the Qur'an.
Whereas, by burning the Mushaf, it will precisely increase the love of this ummah for their holy book and it will cause a massive defence to emerge all over the world. Allahu Akbar! It is not impossible that there will be a wave of curiosity on the world population. Why must the holy book of Muslims be burned? What happened, what is in it? Thus, it becomes like a free advertising for our holy book.
Secondly, the Islamic ummah must Fight. Because this is a form of insult that should not be allowed to happen. Of course, by any means we can afford. This war is a war of opinion, a media war and physical war. America has openly allowed that to happen. With that it means that they are also, in an indirect way, involved in this act of defamation. It is clear for the ummah now, which are friends and which are opponents.
Third, this moment should be utilized to revive the love of the ummah for the Qur'an. To inflame their zeal in defending the Qur'an, as well as protecting it. To read and memorize it as a form of our respect for the Qur'an. And being not reluctant to discuss it in the various recommended places. Until the ummah once again wants to love their holy book and are willing to sacrifice in defending it. Inflame once again the spirit of loving the Qur'an. Motivate once again the campaign of “Indonesia Memorizing The Qur'an”. Instil that love among the Muslims. Enliven once again the TPQ's (Al-Qur'an Education Parks) which are in all corners of the archipelago. Defend our Qur'an by reading and practising it.
Fourth, this event shows the world who the most stupid people (nation) in the world are. The people who can not sort out problems. The people who can not do justice. The nation that can not be democratic, despite their claim of being the most democratic nation. It is now clear who the barbarians are. Using emotions and desires while common sense is abandoned. A very evident hostility that could not be hidden any longer. A lost morality, as it is precisely this immoral act that is being adopted by the religious leaders among them.
Fifth, this could be a cheap provocation of greater political interests. The west still wants to provoke so that violence will always happen. They always want the Islamic ummah to do terror and violence. By burning the Qur'an they want the Islamic ummah, or at least some groups of Islamic struggle to fight back with terrors. This is done so that the image of Islam in the eyes of the world is again destroyed by the label of Islam being a religion of violence and a religion that spreads hatred. Whereas, the case shows just the opposite. The Western society, which is said to appreciate differences, is apparently unable to prevent the burning of the Qur'an, which was done by a church congregation which only number around five dozen people . A double standard is always applied here.
It is time for the Islamic ummah to open their eyes widely. That the sweet smiles offered by the West are not entirely sincere coming from the deepest part of the heart. Because there is a wave of Islamophobia that is allowed to grow. In fact, it is not enough to be just left in the realm of thought, the act of burning the holy book of the Islamic ummah was also allowed to happen under the name of freedom of expression. Muslims may one day have to give lessons to the West of how to apply freedom in its appropriate place. Because the west has failed to understand the problem. Their ignorance and abject attitude towards the Bible, has made them think that other religion's holy book can also be treated like the Bible. Discarded and considered as street wastes.
The phenomenon of hatred against Islam is predicted to be more vulgar as times goes by. After the Fitna film, the banning of the veils, the burning of the Qur'an, and the murder of innocent civilians under the name of war, the west may have set up a larger plan. And supposing that this ummah is only silent and will always be silent, then perhaps Islam will only be a subject of mock or ridicule. But if, on the other hand, the youths of this ummah are willing to take the initiative in resistance and struggle, then this Islam will be more successful in the future.
We are confident with the verse of Allah, "Do then those who devise evil (plots) feel secure that Allah will not cause the earth to swallow them up, or that the punishment will not come upon them from where they do not perceive? Or that He would not seize them during their [usual] activity, without a chance of their frustrating Him [i.e. escaping from Him]? Or that He would not seize them gradually [in a state of dread]? But indeed, your Lord is Kind and Merciful." (al-Nahl:45-47)
