Chronology of Military Exercises of the Terror Suspects at Mako Brimob and Terrorization Incidents in Aceh

JAKARTA - A result of an investigation issued after a discussion held by the Forum Ulama of Indonesia (FUI) yesterday and submitted by an investigation team member who is the leader of the Central Executive Council of the Front Pembela Islam (FPI) and Commander of the Laskar Umat Islam, Munarman SH; explained how the terrorization of the military exercises of the FPI members in Aceh developed. The result of this investigation finally explained the linkage between the terrorization of the military exercises in Aceh and the military exercise conducted at the Brimob (Mobile Brigade) Mako (command headquarters), in Kelapa Dua, Depok.

The followings are the details:

December 2008
Israeli conducted aggression against Gaza for the umpteenth time. In that aggressive attack, Israel was using phosphorous bombs and other chemical weapons which violated international law. For such blind aggressive attacks, the world responded by issuing condemnations.

The Islamic world in particular gave a strong reaction on the aggression. The FPI as a prominent Islamic organization in Indonesia, responded by announcing the opening of command posts for registrations of Mujahideen to be sent to Gaza.

January 2009
The FPI Aceh as one of the spearheads of the organization become one of the organizers of the Mujahideen recruitment program. Officially, the Central Executive Council of the FPI Aceh opened registration posts on 10th January 2009, located at the Nurul Muttaqin musolla, Bathoh Banda Aceh village and Pondok Pesantren Daarul Mujahidin to be trained and then if the criterion were met and according to the capabilities of the organization, they would be dispatched to Gaza.

The training was held openly and it received coverage by the local medias. The instructor in the training was someone who offered himself to be the trainer, namely Sofyan Tsauri, a deserter policeman who had served in the District Police of Jabar.

February 2009
The participants of the training in Aceh, who numbered around 67, 15 of them went to Jakarta for the preparation of their departure to Gaza. (Munarman explained that all costs of accommodation for the participants, starting from the Aceh – Jakarta journey, to the staying in Jakarta were sponsored by Sofyan Tsauri)

15th February 2009, some of the participants of the Aceh trainings who were in Jakarta, individually and without the knowledge of the group leader went to Depok to meet their ex-trainer i.e Sofyan Tsauri.

21st February 2009, upon completion of their preparations for the departure to Gaza which was delayed due to various excuses, one of them was that the Israeli attack on Gaza had stopped. The Mujahideen were asked to return first to Aceh, awaiting for instruction and further development of the situation in Gaza.

From the 15 Mujahideen who went to Jakarta, 5 of them returned to Aceh and 10 others quietly, without informing the Central Executive Council of the FPI, went to Depok, to the residence of Sofyan Tsauri who was also their ex-trainer in Aceh.

Those 10 people stayed for about a month at the residence of Sofyan Tsauri, with the costs fully borne by Sofyan Tsauri, including pocket money and the cost of meals and other needs.

February – March 2009

During the period of February to late March 2009, those 10 people who came from Aceh were trained and indoctrinated by Sofyan Tsauri. One of these forms of indoctrination was the allowance of the way of robbery to finance jihad, spreading hatred and hostility purely on the basis of being foreigners.

As for the training provided, they conducted shooting training using live ammunitions in the Command Headquarters of Brimob in Kelapa Dua, Depok. Each trainee was given about 30 to 40 bullets for that shooting exercises.

The trainees were also given pocket money per week during the training process.

From the information obtained from trainees, Sufyan Tsauri deliberately put his dismissal letter from the police department to be read by the trainees, which contained information that the concerned was fired for engaging in jihad activities, practicing polygamy and rarely coming to work.

From the period of March 2009 to January 2010, Sufyan Tsauri went round not only in Aceh but in the Island of Java. For example at that time, he had the opportunity to go to Solo and other districts. What’s strange was that he offered money for every opening of trainings, as much as 500 million Rupiah to every ustadz in the locality who wants to open up military training. Luckily, the ustadzs around Solo generally refused. But apparently there were some who were successfully recruited and brought to the trainings in Aceh.

January 2010
6 out of those 10 people who undertook training in Depok, participated in the military training in Jantho Aceh Besar. The training this time was also facilitated by Sofyan Tsauri.

February 2010
The military training in Jantho Aceh Besar was ambushed by the security forces.

May 2010
The military training in Jantho Aceh Besar was linked to the raid on Dulmatin’s group in Pamulang and exposed by the police and mass media as a preparatory training for terrorist activities.

(As reported by the mass media, besides Sofyan Asauri, the police also arrested other members of the police who participated in the training. Among others, First Brigadier Tatang Mulyadi and First Brigadier Abdi Tunggal from the logistics unit of the armory section.

In the case of military logistics owned the National Police, intelligence analyst, Mardigu W Prasantyo, in the discussion at the Forum Ulama of Indonesia (FUI), expressed the impossibility of the Police logistics to be used for activities outside the police, let alone for terrorism activities without the permission of the police authorities.
